An empty space in the vitrine has evoked a painful sense of loss in the Queen for a long time, and she gives her secretary an assignment: Procure for me that which I want more than anything else in the world!

But the fairy tale does not only start there.

It also starts in an inherited flat in Copenhagen, where the faithful and slightly simple Margrethe from The Royal Danish Porcelain Manufactory has lived all her life. Now she has been given the sack and at once has to take a job as a washerwoman at TransportCentralen so as to survive and to support her slob of a husband, Mr. Jeppsen, who she had inadvertently married six years earlier. She fantasises about killing him. But she is spared this, for soon a series of events take her and her helper Magdelone, who sees beauty in every face,off on a wild journey to Norway, towards shattered dreams, queen-red lipstick and whirlwind love.

And the queen’s wish? The story tells of that too.
