To be able to the role of a manager in today’s organizations we need to first consider the scope of the managerial role. It is quite confusing because there is so much overlap between the functions of a manager and the functions of a leader. It is however generally accepted that a leader is always involved with people, they lead others. Whereas a manager is not necessarily responsible for people they may well manage a process, a project or even a department, but they may be the only person involved in those activities.
Of course management more often than not does involve people, even if it is only temporarily as in the case of a project, but it is not a prerequisite of the role. Therefore, management is not directly linked to people but is more closely associated with a process within the organization.
