It's a sultry, sweaty summer in Vienna, and a record breaking heatwave has dragged all movement to slow motion. But death lurks in the sparse shadows, where news of the passing of famed vocal coach Enrico Volta has unleashed chaos upon the city of music.

Enrico's five star sopranos, the Emeralds, gather in Vienna for Volta's memorial concert, as fans from around the world flood in to camp outside the State Opera, hoping to snag one of the free tickets. The show will bring untold funds into the city, and performing grants each Emerald a cut of Volta's billion Euro fortune, but only if all of them perform.

For Detective Andreas Wolke, devoted opera fan, it would be a dream to see the show. But just as the news breaks, he's called to a crime scene. The victim is soon identified as Edwina Mortimer: the sixth Emerald who supposedly died twenty years ago. Beneath her tongue are five mysterious seeds - a sinister warning that Volta's remaining ingenues are next. And in her pocket is a key to Room 14 of the Hotel Orient.

As Sterling Lockwood, the Hotel Orient's concierge-extraordinaire turns official consultant, she and Detective Andreas join forces to hunt down the serial killer, save the city's songbirds, and ensure the show must go on.
