Leprosy is a stand-alone sequel to the books The Norwegian Slave Trade and The Night Man. What these books share in common that they are about the somewhat unknown, darker sides of Norwegian history.
The subject of the new book is leprosy and what it did to people and society in Norway for hundreds of years. Those who were infected came from all walks of life, and the disease spared no one.
In this book, Anders Totland tells the story of some of those affected here in the country. It's about bodies withering away, people who are thrown out by their families, communities in disarray, desperate escape attempts, and lepers who snuck around having sex when no one could see them. We also hear how researchers, led by Armauer Hansen, managed to combat the disease in Norway.
